4 Indentification

4.1 General

Parents and school staff are of paramount importance in recognising children with these difficulties. Physical Education (PE) staff in particular may have an important role as well as the class teacher2. Within the Health Service, primary care professionals such as Health Visitors and School Nurses are best placed to identify these children.

A description of the typical features which may be present in pre-school and the school age child with DCD is provided in Appendix A, courtesy of the Highland DCD Group. The features described in the checklists are examples and not all the difficulties will necessarily be present in every child.

4.2 Speech and Language

The system for early detection of children with speech and language problems centres mainly with the Health Visitors and they are the main referrers to Speech and Language Therapists19. Parental concern prompts approximately 50% of Health Visitors’ referrals.
