One of the greatest needs for parents of children and young people with DCD is advice and information relating to education. The Scottish Executives ‘Special Educational Needs Innovation Grants’ recently awarded a consortium of Highland children’s charities (including HDCD) a grant of £200,000. This consortium’s project is called ‘Highland SEN Support Partnership’.

For the next two years the partnership will employ nine full and part-time ‘Education Support Advisors’. These Advisors are to have a specific role in providing support and advice to parents of children and young people within the education system who have special educational needs. They will also help and advise professionals seeking information about a specific disorder or disability.

Partners in the successful bid included Highland Council, Highland Children’s Forum (HCF), Children in the Highlands Information Point (CHIP), Highland Developmental Co-ordination Disorders Group (HDCD), Highland Dyslexia

Association (HDA), Scottish Society for Autism (SSA) and Positive Parenting. This project is known as CHESS, Children in the Highlands Education Support Service, contactable via CHIP.

The impact for children and young people affected by DCD by this new project will be the enhancement of its current service by a further ten hours per week. These ten hours will be devoted purely to education.

It is important that up-to-date information is easily available to parents and professionals. The Highland DCD group have collated a list of useful references/resources. These are attached in Appendix D.
