11 Movement Groups

Within Highland, several schools have been carrying out motor development programmes in small groups.

Motor programmes are designed to assist in developing movement skills for children. The children may be immature, awaiting further assessment and/or have difficulty managing mainstream Physical education. These children would have their needs met following Education-based programmes, carried out in schools by Education staff, without therapy direction but with parental consent. This is referred to as a MOVEMENT PROGRAMME.

The identification of children who would benefit from a movement programme and their subsequent participation may assist in further identifying a small number of children who may continue to show difficulties and would benefit from a referral to a Community Paediatrician.

These children may be cognitively able and motivated to carry out the tasks but have more complex motor and sensory problems which affect their ability to do so. These problems may also affect their ability in practical tasks such as feeding, writing, dressing and technical classes in school etc.

Pupils may be identified and take part in Education movement programmes without prior screening by the Community Paediatrician or the therapy services.

It is important to seek medical advice immediately if a child loses skills they had previously acquired and they become more clumsy. Children who are not maturing at an expected rate or who are giving cause for concern should be discussed with the Community Paediatrician after consultation with the parents. The Community Paediatrician will assess the child and refer to the therapy services if this is considered to be appropriate.

Where the Paediatrician refers a child, the therapist may after assessment decide that direct intervention within a group may be appropriate for the individual child. This type of programme would be therapy based, using therapeutic techniques specific to the child. This is referred to as a THERAPY PROGRAMME. Therapy programmes can be carried out at home, school and in the clinic. The therapist directs the activities, directly or indirectly assisting the family, carer or school to follow a programme designed for the individual child.

More detailed guidelines for movement groups are being developed and will be disseminated in the near future.
