16 DCD and Co-Morbidity in Relation to the Autism and ADHD Reviews

| Back | Table of Contents | Next |

The DCD guideline contains recommendations which overlap with the needs of many children with Autism, Dyslexia and ADHD. However, it should be recognised that each of these conditions may be present without DCD and therefore require assessment in their own right.

It is therefore important to note that a Joint Service Review on children and young persons with Autistic Spectrum Disorders has recently been carried out. The Review recognised that children with the co-morbidity developmental disorders common to Autism – Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, ADHD – will benefit from the recommendations and service developments of this review.

The Autism Review has recommended:

  • An additional Autism Outreach teacher with expertise in all co-morbidity issues.
  • Multi-agency training in co-morbidity issues.
  • Family key workers to co-ordinate support and planning for families to ensure there is adequate planning for transitions, especially into adulthood.

In addition, a working group is currently looking into the specific needs of children and young persons with ADHD.
