This document has been written by an enthusiastic team which includes representation from a wide variety of disciplines throughout the Highlands. Details of the membership of the Interagency Steering Group are given in the Preface. It is intended to provide a baseline for practice relating to Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD) in children in the Highlands. The length of the document reflects not only the complexity of the condition but also the numerous issues involved if there is to be a mutual understanding of the condition across agencies. It is a reference document for parents and professionals in Health, Education, Social Work Services and the Voluntary Services which has been designed to allow the reader to dip in and out to read a particular topic of interest. We therefore acknowledge that there is some repetition to allow each topic to be read in isolation from the full document. The reader can access information on who plays a key role in the recognition of DCD, (sections 4 and 8); key symptoms to look for, (Appendix A); what to do if a child is thought to have difficulties (section 6); and who is involved in assessing and managing these children, (section 7, 8 and 9). In addition it is anticipated that each of the disciplines will write their own professional guide on the subject. A brief summary will also be distributed to doctors in General Practice. This is intended to be a flexible document which will evolve in response to the changing needs of families and children as new information and knowledge becomes available. The historical background, prevalence and importance of the subject are summarised. In view of the confusion surrounding the terms used in describing this condition, a comprehensive glossary of terms has been provided in Appendix B. The role of the various inter-agency disciplines is described together with an outline of the recommended procedures for the identification, referral, assessment and diagnosis of children with DCD. The importance of partnership with parents and liaison between professionals is stressed. The distinction between movement groups and therapy groups is highlighted. | Back | Table of Contents | Next | | Home | DCD Explained | Guidance Notes | Group Activities | Newsletters | Design & Development by Merkinch Technology Centre. |
